I believe throughout the film "The Cider House Rules" the one memorable line is "Sometimes you gotta break the rules to make things straight." This saying is played out alot in this film. To start off with is Fuzzy's death. To protect the other children, Dr. Larch made up a lie about a medical family adopting Fuzzy cause they have a better breathing machine. Next is Mr. Rose's death. Even though Rose Rose stavved her father in the stomach, Mr. Rose told Homer to tel lthe police he was devastated that his only daughter ran away that he killed himself. Another example that really stood out in the movie was when Homer got his x-ray's of his heart and later found out that the x-rays he had were actually Fuzzy's heart. Dr. Larch did this so he could keep Homer out of the war.
I found Dr. larch clever throughout this whole film. The one part that i felt related to this quote was when Dr. Larch made up this whole impressive ressume of Homer's when he had never attended or accomplished any of that. What was really interesting is when he was homer brand new diaplomas. But the best part was Dr. Larch acting the total opposite of how he felt. When he meet with the board and was talking about how Homer wasn't qualified or even committed in doing this. The board ended up liking him and Dr. Larch's reverse psychology worked out in his favor.
I think the scene that best displayed this quote was when the morning after Homer had given Ms. Rose Rose an abortion and he was reading the cider house rules. He was standing by the stove and decided to throw the piece of paper in the stove and burn them. I think those rules really stood for the rules and he's beliefs about giving abortions. I think at that point not only did Dr. Larch live by the line "sometimes you gotta break the rule to make things straight" but also Homer was following in his footsteps. This scene reminded me of when Homer use to throw away the specimens from Dr. Larch's operations but now that Homer is bending the rules and i think accepting that doing the right might not always follow the rules.
Some other really recognizable qutoes were
-" Goodnight you princes of maine and kings of New England."
-"What business you in?"
-"Make yourself useful"
-"Let's be happy for _____, she/he found a new home. Goodnight ______! Goodnight!"
